Word to KindleWhen looked at from the outside, properly formatting a Kindle book can seem like a daunting task. It’s really quite straightforward, though, once you know what to do and what not to do, and the goal of the Word to Kindle module is to help you learn just that. Correctly formatting your book in Microsoft Word and then uploading the resulting file is the easiest way to go from having your words on a page to a having a purchasable book on Amazon.com.

What’s detailed here in the Word to Kindle module should work for just about any kind of book you’d want to create. The exact needs of your project will vary depending on the kind of book it is. For example, you might not need a table of contents or images in your book, but knowing how to add them is good to know just in case you do want to work with them in the future.

In parts 7 and 8 below, I go through step-by-step and show you the process of formatting a Kindle book in Word, from beginning to end. You can download all of the files that I use and follow along with me as I format the document. But I strongly encourage you to go through parts 1 through 6 first, as those talk about the hows and the whys of formatting in much more detail. Once you’ve got that technical knowledge, parts 7 and 8 will make much more sense.

One final piece of advice I’ll give is to not worry about formatting your book until you’ve finished writing it. Write and edit and polish up and complete the text of your ebook before moving on to the formatting.
